In a freak incident, a crane collapsed from a 40-storey building in Parel on Friday afternoon, leaving one dead and two others injured. Fortunately, a major disaster was averted as most workers had gone for lunch.

According to the police, the incident occurred at an under-construction site at Jerbai Wadia road near Mahatma Phule College in Parel.

"Part of the crane that was at the 20th floor of the Crescent Bay Tower collapsed and fell on a neighbouring chawl, in which a woman and another person were injured," said Arun Inarkar, senior police inspector, RAK Marg police station.

A worker at the construction site suffered severe injuries, leading to his death. "He has been identified as Jaikumar Sharma," said Inarkar.

The injured woman, identified as Savita Pendavle, has been admitted to the KEM Hospital.

"The incident occurred around 2 pm when the workers were out for lunch. Else, it could have been a major tragedy," said Inarkar. The crane operator was also out when the incident occurred. The 40-storey building is part of a Slum Rehabilitation Authority project, the police said.

"We will book the crane operator for negligence," said Inarkar.

After the fire brigade received a call around 2:20 pm, two fire tenders and an ambulance were rushed to the spot.

Deepak Kalinga, a resident of the area, said: "It happened in a fraction of a second that no one could make out what was happening. There was a loud noise, and when we rushed to the spot, we saw that the crane had collapsed".

Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM Hospital, said, "One was brought dead and two have been admitted. Savita Phadke has head injuries. She is drowsy and is on oxygen. We are monitoring her condition. Ravindra Sonawane is stable."
