None Of The Above (NOTA) option, introduced for the first time in the five state assembly elections, made a notable impact as more than 15 lakh people exercised the option in all the four states, results for which were declared on Sunday.

Although just 1.31% of the total 11.53 crore voters used the option, in absolute numbers, even the small percentage made a huge dent in the prospects of political parties, especially the Congress.

In Delhi, 49,730 voters opted for NOTA, in Chattisgarh, around 3.56 lakh voters opted for NOTA while in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, 5.9 lakh and 5.67 lakh voters respectively pressed the NOTA button on voting machines.

In Delhi, NOTA deeply damaged the ruling Congress’ prospects, as constituencies that have been Congress bastions registered a significantly high percentage of voters opting for NOTA.  In Chhattisgarh, too, people opted for NOTA in huge numbers. Dantewada (9,677), the biggest Maoist bastion, as well as Bijapur (7,119) and Narainpur (6,302) are among districts where voters liberally exercised the NOTA option.
