Maldives's fourth president -- its first democratically elected one -- Mohamed Nasheed, whose Maldivian Democratic Party came to power in 2008, resigned on February 7. Nasheed stated that he was forced to resign "at gunpoint" by police and army officers, explaining that continuing in office would result in his having to use force against the people.

In a brazen terror attack on Monday, an Israeli embassy car exploded in the high-security zone, 500 metres from prime minister Manmohan Singh's residence, 7 Race Course Road in New Delhi, minutes after a motorcycle-borne man attached a magnetic device to its rear. Four persons, including the wife of an Israeli diplomat, were injured in the attack.
The BCCI and the aggrieved Sahara Group reached a compromise after a series of hectic negotiations over the past few days, paving the way for Pune Warriors' participation in the fifth edition of the IPL. In a recent incident, armed Italian naval personnel on board an Italian merchant ship, Enrica Lexie, attacked an Indian fishing vessel and killed two fishermen off the Kochi coast which has resulted in a violation of international law. The naval guards were arrested by the Kerala police. They have been charged with murder under section 302 of the Indian Penel Code.
An inmate riot that may have been staged to cover a breakout killed 44 prisoners on February 19. The riot broke out at about 2 am in a high-security section of a state prison in the city of Apodaca outside the northern industrial city of Monterrey. The fight between two cell blocks, each with about 750 prisoners, may have been staged as a cover for a prison break.

Two ministers were caught on camera allegedly watching a porn clipping on a mobile phone in the state Assembly during its proceedings. The shocking incident involved Minister for Cooperation Laxman Savadi, who was watching the clippings, and Minister for Women and Child Development CC Patil with whom he shared it.
A petition has been filed against Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid in a local court in Farukhabad demanding action against him for allegedly flaring up communal sentiments by his statements on Muslim sub-quota. Khurshid's statement that he would ensure 9% reservation to Muslims "even if the EC hangs him" were aimed at ensuring the victory of his wife Louis Khurshid by flaring up communal sentiments.

A Ukrainian women activists tore up the Indian flag in a topless act in Kiev in January to protest India's reported tightening of visa rules for young women from Ukraine. Carrying placards that read "Ukraine is not brothel" and "I am not prostitute", the women had climbed up to the balcony of the Indian ambassador's residence in the Ukrainian capital, after stripping up to the waist braving sub-zero temperatures to lodge a novel protest.
