While there are 69 natural ponds across the megapolis where people could complete the ritual, a total of 31 artificial ponds were created for the immersion.
The 'visarjan' (immersion) processions of Ganesha idols on the last day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival began in Mumbai on Thursday amid tight security and fanfare as chants of "Ganpati bappa morya, pudchya varshi laukar ya" filled the air.
The morning downpour did not dampen the spirit of the revellers, who were seen on the streets singing and dancing while bidding a final adieu to Lord Ganesha.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had estimated that over 50,000 idols would be immersed across the metropolis on the last day of the visarjan.
Here are some scenes from the occasion.
