This year, the theme for the World Water Day is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.
The United Nations says that the damaged ecosystems affect the quantity and quality of water available for human consumption.
As a matter of fact, over 2 billion people live without safe drinking water at home; affecting their health, education and livelihoods.
Hence, there is an urgent need for world to ensure that everyone has access to safe water. The Sustainable Development Goal number 6 also targets on protecting the natural environment and reducing pollution.
In its recent report, the UNESCO says that India will be battling with severe water crisis with many parts of central India witnessing withdrawal of 40 per cent of the renewable surface water resources.
The water crisis is real and it’s absolutely impossible to ignore it. South Africa’s Cape Town made global headlines after study suggested that it would become world’s first city to run out of water. In fact, the National Geographic has also too done a study that predicts much bleaker future for other world cities.
