How can road travel in India be made safer and smoother?

Friday, October 23, 2009 18:17 IST

With about 1.3 lakh deaths being reported in road accidents in the country last year, the government is poised to have a re-look into the Motor Vehicles Act and plan vehicle fitness testing units to strengthen safety measures.

Ensuring proper facilities for those learning to drive, providing good roads, and changing the prevailing attitude of "not caring" for other vehicles or pedestrians can help in improving road safety, Brahm Dutt, secretary in the ministry of road transport and highways, said.

What changes do you think can be made in the Motor Vehicles Act to make travelling by road easier, smoother, and safer? How should these changes be implemented?

Roads in india can be made much better if the people living here cooperate by not throwing rubbish and the government must take strict actions about roads which are not yet built. If we have a dream to make India like America, we should participate in making the dream come true.

The problem is the driver and not the road. Is there anything like a trained driver in India?

Logic Induction,
Govt should look at the way licences are given in this country. The test does not put any emphasis on safety of driver and other road users. Driving licences are given out like one buying a cinema ticket. As I have lived in UK, where passing a driving test is liking getting a university degree. Govt should look at those countries and adopt a system which is suitable to our country but without compromising on safety issue. Motorcyclist are totally ignorante of driving rules and should be dealt with very strict laws. After living in UK for 30 years, I came back to India and drive. When my friends ask how I manage, jokingly I tell them you need no mirrors to look at as you don't worry about sides or back of your vehicle. Just make sure your vehicle's front gets in and others will worry about sides and back. And really it is the only way you can reach your destination. It's totally acceptable for you to not stop at red traffic lights when policeman are not around and if you stop you will annoy a lot of other drivers. Breaking the rules is part of driving rules and everybody has to do it as part of their driving skills. To change this system, we need organisations like SOCH (NGO) in Hyderabad. They have started educating young citizens of our country with regard to road safety.
