Our grandfathers voted for Jawaharlal Nehru. Our parents and uncles voted for his daughter Indira Gandhi and her son Rajiv. And now, many of our younger generations are pledging allegiance to Rahul Gandhi, son of Rajiv. Meanwhile, Rahul's mother Sonia Gandhi is set to be 're-elected' unopposed as Congress president for a fourth successive term.
Whether it is the Gandhis, the Scindias, the Pawars, or the Karunanidhi clan, India is fast becoming a shining example of dynastic politics. But it is also true that these dynasties are being perpetuated because voters vote for them while the party faithful elevate them to great heights. The number of sons, daughters, wives and other relatives that politicians come attached with reminds us of Indian business families and the Indian film industry.
The Congress may have pioneered this trend, but no party is immune to it anymore, an irony because India is the world's largest democracy.
Do you think this trend will destroy democracy in India? How do we end this?
