Admitting that he has taken a ‘tough’ stand, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday justified the turn of events in the Samajwadi Party. ‘Sometimes to protect the ones you love you must make the right decision. What I did today was a tough decision but one that I had to take,’ Akhilesh tweeted. Meanwhile, the battle between the two factions of the Samajwadi Party is likely to reach the Election Commission’s office tomorrow, with Akhilesh camp hinting that it will stake a claim to the party’s symbol ‘cycle’. Sources said the new president has to approach the Election Commission according to the party’s convention, claiming to be the real Samajwadi Party and stake claim on the party symbol.

As per the party’s constitution, the president of the party allots symbols in election.  The party split earlier in the day with a national convention declaring Akhilesh the new national president, a post that was held by his father Mulayam Singh Yadav. The convention also made Mulayam the Samajwadi Party’s patron.

As the crisis within the Samajwadi Party refused to die down, the doctors conducted a health check-up of Mulayam Singh Yadav at his residence here this evening after he complaint of high blood pressure.
The Samajwadi Party split on Sunday with a national convention declaring Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav the new national president, a post that was held by his father.
The convention also made Mulayam, the patron of the party.

As the day progressed, the fight between the rival factions turned ugly, with supporters of the two groups fighting for the party office.
However, Akhilesh justified the turn of events in the party even as he admitted that he had taken a ‘tough’ decision.
‘Sometimes to protect the ones you love you must make the right decision. What I did today was a tough decision but one that I had to take,’ he tweeted.

The Chief Minister after being proposed as the national president said his respect for his father was more than ever, adding that he would stand against those conspiring against the party.
Amid reports of the Akhilesh camp mobilising the supporters for the convention, Mulayam in a letter issued by the party declared the meeting ‘unconstitutional’ and warned of strict action against anyone who attended it.
The meeting adopted three resolutions through voice vote. First, that Akhilesh should immediately replace Mulayam as the party’s chairman and that the founder of the party should be given the role of ‘chief mentor’.

Second, Akhilesh’s uncle, Shivpal Yadav, should be removed from the position of UP state president of the party with immediate effect.
Third, Amar Singh, also seen by the Akhilesh faction as the main troublemaker, should be expelled from the party immediately.

And now expelled SP leader Naresh Agarwal thinks that the BJP has a slight hand in the events. He told ANI: “Humare rashtriya adhyaksh Akhilesh ho gaye hain, toh fir netaji ko humein nikaalne ka koi adhikar nahi reh gaya. Netaji ko maansik roop se kabza kar liya gaya hai, wo cheezon ko soch nahi paa rahe hain. Wo apne shubhchintakon se door ho rahe hain, aur unke kareeb jo unko defame krna chahte hain,BJP ke nazdeek dikhana chahte hai. It is unfortunate, netaji's (Mulayam) step is totally unconstitutional. Jo baap apne bete ko party se nikaal sakta hai, wo humein nikaal de toh kaunsi badi cheez hai? Nayi cheez nahin hai. Netaji ne party ko banaya, lekin aisa nahin ki party mein jo netaji (Mulayam) kahenge wohi hoga. Democracy hoti hai. Netaji Modi ki tareef karna band kariye, aur apne bete ki agar tareef kariye toh wo zyada achha hoga.”
