Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a high level meeting to review the situation in the Kashmir Valley, where one of the worst violence in recent years has left 23 people dead.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, MoS Jitendra Singh, Ajit Doval along with other senior officials were the part of the meeting.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh said that PM has appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to maintain calm.
"He has appealed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir to maintain peace so that the situation can normalise. He also expressed hope that no innocent person should face any kind of inconvenience or loss," MoS Jitendra Singh said after the meeting.
The Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction over the progress of the Amarnath Yatra and said whatever help needed by the state government will be provided by the Centre.
Meanwhile, with Kashmir on the edge, Rajnath Singh has also postponed his visit to the United States to attend the Indo-US Homeland Security Dialogue scheduled for next week.
A Home Ministry official cited the busy schedule during the coming Monsoon session of Parliament beginning July 18 as the reason for the deferment of the visit.
Kashmir has been on a boil as widespread protests broke out across the valley over Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani's killing. Separatists' have been calling for a shutdown ever since.
The death toll in the clashes between protesters and security forces in Kashmir mounted to 23, as normal life remained paralysed in the Valley due to curfew-like restrictions and separatists-sponsored strike in the wake of Wani's killing in an encounter earlier on July 8.
