The Shiv Sena is maintaining its hold on Mumbai, leading on over 84 seats followed by BJP on 82 seats as trends of counting of votes in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, where the saffron frenemies are locked in a battle, poured in. The Congress and the NCP are far behind the Sena and the BJP, with 39 and 7 seats, respectively, in the 227-member BMC.
BJP and its bickering ally in the state government Shiv Sena, who could not form an alliance for the civic poll in the megapolis or elsewhere this time, fought keenly, lashing out freely at each other during the bitter campaign.
The stakes are high for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, who led their respective parties from the front and were involved in a high decibel and no-holds-barred campaign, relegating the opposition Congress, NCP and other players like the MNS and the AIMIM to the background. As counting trends showed the Shiv Sena surging far ahead, BJP said it will "introspect" reasons for the party's performance which was "not as per expectations".
"We will introspect and find out reasons for our performance in Mumbai, which was not as per expectations," Maharashtra BJP chief spokesperson Madhav Bhandari said. "We have worked hard to reach the number one position in Maharashtra and have taken the party beyond Mumbai and Thane," he said. Meanwhile, BJP leader Vinod Tawde said his party has emerged as the overall leader in elections to 10 municipal corporations and 25 zilla parishads held recently.

Key takeaways from Uddhav Thackeray's press conference:
- We have fallen short of majority by a few seats.
- How to manage majority will be our concern later. We are the number 1 party in Mumbai and let's celebrate now.
- We wanted to rule Mumbai and we have done that.
- We have done better than last time.
- We have managed to secure this win because of Shiv Sainiks efforts and blessings of Mumbaikars.
- Shiv Sena is clearly the single largest party in BMC.
- We fell short of just few votes in some seats.
- It isn't only Maharashtrians who voted for us. We even thank Muslim voters who came out in large numbers in Behrampada and voted for first Shiv Sena candidate from the ward.
- NOTA has affected other political parties.
- Missing names of voters needs to be investigated.
