Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will travel to Amritsar today where he will visit the Golden Temple and hold talks with Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.
Singh has in the past said he was concerned about Sikh groups in Canada trying to revive an independent state called Khalistan. He had also accused Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan of having ties with Khalistan movement in Canada.
Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu will receive Trudeau at Sri Guru Ramdas International Airport in Amritsar today.
Later on, Sidhu would also accompany the Canadian premier on a visit to the Golden Temple and the Partition Museum.
The Canadian prime minister is on a week-long visit to India. Trudeau is accompanied by wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau and three children -Ella-Grace, Xavier and Hadrien.
The ties between India and Canada have been on an upswing. Approximately 1.4 million Canadians are of Indian heritage and India is Canada's second largest source of immigrants.
Canada is also a leading education destination for Indian students, and India is the second largest source of international students, an estimated 124,000 in 2017, as per official figures.
