Patna-born MLA: I’m an example of how Russia accepts outsiders
Abhay Kumar Singh

It's an unlikely romance, but there is no mistaking the affection behind it: Abhay Kumar Singh went to Russia 30 years ago and fell so deeply in love with the country that he joined its political landscape and is now an MLA representing the western city of Kursk. The Patna-native contested on a ticket from Russian President Vladimir Putin's party—the United Russia party.

"I came to Russia in 1991 to study medicine at Kursk State Medical University," says Singh, "The Soviet Union had just collapsed, and it was a new dawn for Russia. There were abundant business opportunities and vacant spaces to set up establishments. I started a small pharmaceutical business parallel to my studies, and plunged into it full time afterwards." He contested in a provincial election from Kursk Assembly in 2018 and won. "I am proud of Vladimir Putin and to belong to his party; I am very happy to see him in party conferences," he says.

In an exclusive interview with WION's foreign correspondent, Sidhant Sibal, he talks about his love for the country and how he balances his two identities.

How do you see India, Russia relations?

As a deep, traditional friendship. As a schoolboy, I went to Russian book fairs in India. Somewhere in my heart, there was always a soft spot for Russia, and the love only grew when I came here.

So many Indians would like to settle in Russia, but does the language gap become a hindrance?

There is a language problem, and Russia is a tough country. Other countries people accept foreigners easily, but I am also an example of how Russia has accepted outsiders. There are about 15,000 Indians working in the country and about 40,000 Indian students in different universities. Racism is a thing of the 1990s, it does not exist anymore.

Are you an outsider in Russian politics?

I don't think so. I don't know why, but the Russian people accepted me very easily. I defeated my opponent in the elections by a large margin. People voted for me only.

What is the future of Russia?

Our President is a very strong man. He is not only Russia's leader but a world leader. Russia is in the top position among all the countries in the world. Our country is very strong and any problem will be solved.

How do you see Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi... He will be visiting Russia next week...

A lot of people like PM Modi in Russia. He is a strong leader and most welcome here. We are happy to have him.
