MoS for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju tells Abhishek Bhalla a crackdown on terror funding has ensured the nation's security

There has been turmoil in Kashmir for the last one year. What is the situation now?

By their continuous use of violence, the separatists and terrorists adopted means that didn't leave any space for dialogue. The response required was strong physical operations on the ground to ensure peace and tranquillity in Kashmir. Due to the high success rate in these operations, the morale of the Forces has remained high.

What is the government's long term strategy to deal with the situation in Kashmir?

Our approach is rational. Those using illegal methods to raise funds and keeping connections with the enemy cannot be spared. So tough action by the NIA against terror funding and keeping forces on the ground are part of government's resolve to ensure no group can endanger security.

How serious is the ISIS threat in India and what steps have been taken in this regard?

India is not facing a threat from ISIS because of our proactive approach. On the ground, community elders and clergy have played an important role in ensuring the youth do not go astray. On the government's side, state governments, along with the Centre, have been putting in a concerted effort towards de-radicalisation.

What is your assessment of the current status of the Maoist insurgency?

The Maoist challenge is immense but they have been on the retreat for some time now. The high number of surrenders by their leaders and cadres has put them on the back foot and they are very defensive now. Along with operations development in these areas, our aim is to reach out to the poor tribal people. Lack of development was one of the reasons why they (the Maoists) gained ground. Once development reaches them, they will not be able to fool people. In the past 70 years, the governments neglected the tribal people and that is why the Maoists gained ground.

What is your response to allegations that communal harmony is in danger?

As far as communal harmony is concerned the home ministry has taken steps in the right direction. Advisories were sent to all states to deal with these situations when they arose, and incidents of lynching in the name of cow vigilantism have been strictly dealt with. Only parties like the Congress and some pseudo secularists are trying to create a problem. This is an issue I raised in Parliament while speaking on the subject.

What is the current situation regarding the insurgency in the North East?

There is a dip in insurgency in the North East and most of the states are moving towards normalcy. The peace framework with NSCN (IM) is moving in the right direction.

Border security has always been a concern. What measures is the government taking to better secure our borders?

Technological solutions are being adopted to enhance border security. That is the way forward. Hi-tech gadgets for surveillance, better communication system have been put in place. New technology is the way forward for better border management.
