Counting of votes for the 14th Presidential election began here today in which UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee has a clear edge over BJP-backed Purno Sangma.

Counting of ballots began amidst tight security in Parliament House here in the presence of authorised representatives of both Mukherjee and Sangma. The ballot boxes of votes cast in Parliament House were taken up first for counting after which those from the states will be opened.

BJP concedes defeat even before results

The counting of votes began amidst tight security in Parliament House in the presence of authorized representatives of both Mukherjee and Sangma.

Meanwhile, the BJP seems to have accepted defeat with Sudheedra Kulkarni admitting that it was a a foregone conclusion that Pranab Mukherjee would win the polls.

In the 90-mmember Assembly Chhattisgarh, 39 votes went to Mukherjee while Sangma got 50. One vote was invalid.

Results from various states show massive victory in the waiting for Pranab Mukherjee. In Assam, Pranab snagged 110 of the 125 votes while Sangma got 13. In Arunachal Pradesh Pranab got 54 votes while Sangma got 2 . In Bihar too the numbers were in Mukherjee's favour with 146 votes for him and  90 for Sangma. Same in Andhra Pradesh with Pranab at 182 and Sangma at 3.

In Kerala it was a clean sweep for Pranab Mukherjee. He won all the 124 votes polled while one was invalid. Sangma drew a blank. CPI and RSP members abstained from voting which has a 140 member Assembly.

Vote value for Mukherjee in Kerala stood at 18848.

The counting of votes for the Presidential election are still underway but Pranab Mukherjee has crossed the halfway mark to become the 13th President of India.

Mukherjee got a vote value of 5,58,194, crossing the required half-way mark of 5,25,140 after counting of votes in half the states was over.

In 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Mukherjee got 74 votes while Sangma got 149. Four votes were invalid.

In terms of the vote share, Mukherjee got 9694 and Sangma 19,519.
