A constable is battling for life in a government hospital after he was critically injured in violence at India Gate where people were protesting the gangrape of a young girl in a moving bus here.

"Constable Subhash Tomar is fighting for his life," Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said.

Protesters and police were clashing continuously at India Gate during the day. Doctors said the constable has suffered critical injuries.

Several other policemen were also injured in the incident.

Around 100 protesters, including media personnel, were also injured in violence.

Minister of state said that the government has accepted all the demands of the protesters. The commissioner of police regretted lathi-charge on protesters demonstrating against rape of 23-year-old para-medical student in Delhi. Neeraj Kumar said he was not quitting over the issue of rape.

A Delhi Police Constable was tonight battling for life after he was severely beaten up near India Gate by protesters who had gathered to demand security for women in the capital in the wake of last week's gang-rape incident.

On a day hooligans took over and violence erupted in India Gate in which 78 policemen and 65 protesters were injured, police fired 250 teargas shells, repeatedly used water jets and resorted to baton charge.

Among the 78 policemen injured were Joint Commissioner (Central) Taj Hasan, Additional Commissioner (New Delhi) K C Dwivedi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) B S Jaiswal and Additional Deputy Commissioner (New Delhi) Sanjay Tyagi.

"Constable Subhash Tomar is fighting for his life at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital," Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said.

In a late night clampdown, police tonight cleared protesters staging a candlelight vigil at India Gate.

Around 150-200 protesters were at the war memorial at around 10.20 pm when policemen in riot gear arrived at the scene and asked them to vacate the spot.

When the protesters refused, they were physically lifted out of the area.

The protesters then carried out a march near India Gate.
