Lok Sabha Elections 2014: Polling officer on duty passes away in Mumbai; City witnesses 53% voter turnout

India is voting to select a new government and the final counting will take place on 16 May 2014.  Here’s a look at some critical highlights from across the country. 

60% polling recorded in Bihar 

Despite the mercury soaring over 42 degrees Celsius, around 60% voter turnout was recorded at the end of voting in seven Lok Sabha seats of Bihar in the third phase today.

While Supual registered 59% voting till 6 PM, it was 60% in Araria, 64% in Kisanganj, 64% in Katihar, 59% in Purnia, 55% in Bhagalpur and 56.43% in Banka, an Election Commission statement said.

Final count:

Two-thirds electorate cast ballot in Chhattisgarh

Around two-thirds of the electorate in Chhattisgarh's seven Lok Sabha constituencies cast their ballots Thursday in the third and final phase of election in the state, officials said.

About 66% voters exercised their franchise as the polling ended, election officials said.

Balloting was held at 14,474 polling booths in the seven constituencies of Sarguja, Raigadh, Janjgir-Champa, Korba, Bilaspur, Durg and Raipur.

Up to 70 percent electors voted Thursday in Tamil Nadu's 39 Lok Sabha constituencies with the election coming to an end at 6 p.m., said the Election Commission.

According to election officials, voters already in the queue would be allowed to vote while nobody will be allowed to join the line new.

Lok Sabha elections: 70.6% voting recorded in Assam

An estimated 70.6% of the voters exercised their franchise in the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls in Assam which witnessed poll violence in Kokrajhar (ST) constituency where one policeman was killed and two others were seriously injured.

The voting percentage was expected to go up as many voters were still inside the polling booths, election office sources said.

83% voting as time ends in Bengal

Around 83% voting was reported in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal Thursday involving six constituencies as the scheduled time came to an at 6 p.m. while there were people outside the polling booths.

Polling was slow in the six constituencies in Mumbai in Maharashtra as well Anantnag constituency in Jammu and Kashmir.

Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency in south Kashmir witnessed 21% polling till 3 pm today, with Pulwama district recording a low voter turn-out of five per cent.

The constituency - spread over four districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian – witnessed a poll percentage of 21% till 3 pm, officials said.

Anantnag district recorded 32.71% of polling, while Kulgam recorded 30.47%, an official spokesman said.

47% voter turnout was recorded till 3 pm in seven Lok Sabha seats of Bihar where voting is underway in the third phase today.

While Supual registered 49% voting till 3 pm, it was 47% in Araria, 51% in Kisanganj, 47% in Katihar, 45% in Purnia, 44% in Bhagalpur and 43.5% in Banka, an Election Commission statement said.

The second-largest phase in terms of Lok Sabha seats, Today's polls will determine the fate of 2,076 candidates including Union ministers and sitting MPs.

*Congress says telecast of Narendra Modi’s roadshow in constituencies going to polls today violated model code, demands registation of FIR.

*The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of the Bihar Police today arrested Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) state general secretary Lalan Singh on charges of extortion and criminal intimidation.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Thursday took on Narendra Modi on his home turf, accusing the BJP's prime ministerial candidate of not doing enough to prevent corruption in his state.

"I want to know why the Gujarat government took 10 years to appoint a Lokayukta here?" Gandhi said at a public meeting in Valsad.

Taking a jibe at the Gujarat model, Gandhi said the state was burdened with a debt of Rs.175,000 crore.

*Three presiding officers in the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency were removed today by the Election Commission after Trinamool Congress candidate Sk Nurul allegedly influenced voters and violated prohibitory orders.

*The TMC candidate and his followers arrived in a fleet of vehicles, entered the booths and allegedly influenced voters standing in queue to cast their votes in his favour.

Nearly 40% of the electorate cast their vote today in the first seven hours of polling in 117 constituencies in 11 states and Union Territory of Puducherry in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections, amid stray incidents of violence which left a policeman dead in Assam and 13 others injured in other states.

*Foreign currency worth Rs 92 lakh was today seized by Bihar police from an SUV at Anjanipur Chowk in Vaishali district in poll related checking to curb misuse of money and liquor in the Lok Sabha elections. 

Meanwhile, its women who have marched way past in fulfilling their duties: 

Women and young voters comprised the majority of the electorate who came out on Thursday to cast their ballot for seven Lok Sabha seats and two state assembly seats in Bihar. The state saw 25 percent polling till noon.

Additional chief electoral officer R. Lakshmanan said voting was peaceful in the state despite fears of violence."So far, polls have been peaceful with no report of violence," he said. Long queues of women and mostly first-time voters were seen since morning, particularly in rural areas. Voting is being held in Kishanganj, Purnea, Araria, Katihar, Supaul, Bhagalpur and Banka constituencies.

*BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to Varanasi's "Ganga Yamuna tehzeeb" as he promised to improve the lot of the city's Muslim weavers.

*People who had registered themselves a month ago are left in a lurch as their names go missing form electoral rolls in most parts of Mumbai. 

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh targetted Narendra Modi and said, "There is no Modi wave in India."

* Narendra Modi files his nomination papers from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat after a massive roadshow.

*I hope God will give me the strength to serve this holy ground and mother Ganga will bless me: Modi in Varanasi.

The report card so far: 

Braving rising temperatures, voters today turned up in good numbers in many of the 117 constituencies in 11 states and Union Territory of Puducherry in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha polls in which stakes are high for the Congress, BJP and number of other parties like AIADMK, DMK, NCP and Shiv Sena.

An electorate of 18 crore voters will decide the fate of 2076 candidates, including Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sushma Swaraj, Dayanidhi Maran, A Raja, Salman Khurshid and Shahnawaz Hussain.

In all elections to 349 of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies will be completed in today's exercise in the nine-phased poll. Polling for the remaining 194 seats will be held on April 30 (89 seats), May 7 (64) and May 12 (41).

Counting of votes will take place on May 16.

Barring an incident of stone pelting at a booth in Anantnag Parliamentary seat in south Kashmir, which witnessed attack on political workers recently, polling was peaceful in the rest of the constituencies going to poll.

Voters turnout was impressive in Tamil Nadu which witnessed about 40% of the electorate exercising franchise till noon.

Brisk polling was witnessed in various constituencies with Dharmapuri recording 42% followed by Karur 39.6, Thanjavur 39.5 and Dindigul 39.8 per cent.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, MDMK founder Vaiko, Union Minister in the PMO V Narayanasamy seeking re-election in the Union Territory of Puducherry, Tamil actors Rajnikant and Kamal Haasan were among the early voters.

Expelled DMK leader M K Alagiri, Union Finance Finance Minister P Chidambaram, DMK Treasurer M K Stalin, Kanimozhi, former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran seeking re-election in Chennai Central and N Srinivasan were other promiment personalities who exercised their franchise.

Malfunctioning of EVMs held up voting for a brief spell in Myladuthurai, Krishnagiri and few other places, but electoral authorities fixed the problem and ensured resumption of voting.

Maharashtra witnessed top corporate honchos and Bollywood celebrities making a beeline to cast their vote. An average of 7.83 % voting was registered till 9 AM in the state for 19 seats.

Corporate honchos Anil Ambani, Adi Godrej cast vote

Captains of the industry, including Adi Godrej and Anil Ambani, were among the early birds from India Inc to cast their votes in the financial capital today.

Anil Ambani, the head of the Reliance ADAG group, walked into a polling booth (for the Lok Sabha elections) in the tiny Cuffe Parade locality, not far from his residence at the 'Sea Wind' tower at 7.15 am.

Jharkhand Police raid Giriraj Singh's house, BJP leader missing

*Hold re-election in Mumbai South Central say Matunga residents:

A section of Matunga residents have demanded the election commission (EC) to hold again polls in Mumbai south-central constituency after their names were found missing from voters' list.
The sulking voters also sent a letter to the district collector asking him to hold re-election in the constituency which covers areas like Dadar, Mahim, Dharavi, Chembur and Mankhurd.

"It was very disappointing to see my name missing from the list. I could see my mother and wife's name in the list, but not mine which is very disturbing for a voter," Manohar Rao, an advocate and resident of Matunga, sulked.

Rao was supposed to vote at Amulakh Amichand school in Wadala assembly constituency.

Rao said he has made the complaint to the collectors with signatures of 40 other voters whose names were missing. "What we have learnt that names of at least 2 lakh people are missing from the list. On learning my name too missing from the list, I had sought to check mother electoral list for 2009 polls. But it was not shown. I had voted for the previous Lok Sabha polls and also the 2012 civic election, but I won't be able to exercise my right now," Rao rued.

AAP workers detained in Mumbai North East constituency:

*Aam Aadmi party has accused Govandi Police of wrongfully detaining two poll agents of Medha Patkar at the behest of NCP. The NCP workers reportedly denied AAP workers to set their tables at Rafiqnagar, Govandi of Mumbai north east constituency. 

*Seela who is a close associate of Patkar alleged, "The police are hand in gloves with the sitting MP and NCP candidate Sanjay Dina Patil. Instead of arresting Patil's supporters who ousted our workers from the booth they cracked down on our workers who had valid documents from the collector's office to work as poll agents." 

NCP leaders and Govandi Police could not be reached for comments. Patil from NCP, Kirit Somaiya from BJP and Medha Patkar of AAP are contesting from the seat.

*Narendra Modi's nomination process will take place today.

Uddhav Thackeray's take on Modi nomination: "I always would come with late Bal Thackeray to vote but today he is not among us. But, we are moving ahead on the direction shown by him and it is also coincidental that when I vote today, BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is also filing his nomination papers. 

The salient features of his rally cum nomination process is as follows, 

*Narendra Modi will spend over four hours in Varanasi.

*A list of 10 proposers of Modi has been sent to his office, the party leader said, adding Modi would be clearing the name of four people. 

*Another function has been organised where the Gujarat Chief Minister will be offered blessings by over 100 priests. 

*Modi will arrive at Lal Bahadur Shastri airport this morning from where he will go to Benaras Hindu University campus by helicopter to pay tribute to Pandit Madan Mohan Malvya at his statue in the Lanka crossing. 

*Several hundred kg of rose petals and other flowers have been ordered for use during the roadshow. 

*According to an estimate by Modi's campaign managers, lakhs of people are expected to participate in the two-km-long road show from Nadesar to Kacheri locality in the heart of the city during which a number of leading local organisations will greet him. Elaborate plans have been made for security of the BJP leader. 

*Though invited all sections of people to the road show, the party has specifically requested the citizens from Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, residing here, to come in their traditional attire.

24 April 2014: Voters turned away as names go missing from electoral rolls

Mohammed Abdul Qadir was sad to see that he could not vote in Cuffe Parade area. A voter of the same polling booth for 20 years, his name was missing. When he went inside G D Somani School on G D Somani Marg where his booth was set up, he was turned away.

Rashi Rajani, 22 year, resident of Cuffe Parade and law student, "In the last elections I was not eligible to vote. This time I wanted to vote because as kids we look forward to go abroad but there is no reason why there shouldn't be better institutes in India. I voted because I want better educational institutes."

 Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister says that he is confident that the BJP will get 272 on its won and the NDA will win more than 300 seats.

Update: Bollywood actor Salman Khan's parents Salim Khan and Salma's names were not present in voters list. 

A retired high court judge who is the grandson of noted educationist Madan Mohan Malaviya will be among four prominent personalities to propose Narendra Modi’s nomination for Lok Sabha polls here. A renowned singer from Benares, a weaver and a boatman will be among other proposers of Modi’s candidature.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalathaa casts her vote, refuses to comment on political development. “Request all parties and public to cooperate with EC to ensure a peaceful election,” she said. 

Mumbai North Central candidate Priya Dutt cast her vote. 

Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal has alleged that the life-threatening attack on Somnath Bharti was done by BJP supporters. He said, “The incidient shows how frustrated BJP is by the support we are getting in Varanasi……Is this the Gujarat model of development which Modi ji wants to implement?”
