Mulayam Singh Yadav feels with 21 crore population, Uttar Pradesh still doesn't have enough rape cases

Mulayam Singh Yadav feels with 21 crore population, Uttar Pradesh still doesn't have enough rape cases
Mulayam Singh Yadav stirs controversy again: “There are 21 crore people in Uttar Pradesh, yet lowest number of rapes."

Yet another gruesome rape in the lawless Uttar Pradesh, and yet another scandalous comment by Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. After the outrage over the brutal rape and murder, of the 30 year old woman in Lucknow, the minister did not leave an opportunity to jump to the defence of his son Akhilesh Yadav's state.

When asked regarding the law and order situation of UP he said, “There are 21 crore people in Uttar Pradesh, yet lowest number of rapes."

It has just been a month since the horrific gang-rape and murder of two Dalit teenagers in Badaun district. Then he had lashed out at the media saying, “You do your job, I'll do mine.” The irony now lies that, he seems to have failed to do his “job” as the only thing he can seem to do in reaction to the recent rape is provide statistics.

The rape and murder of the 30-year-old woman in Lucknow was not just 'another' rape case. A police inspector confessed “It is more horrendous than the Delhi gang rape and murder”. Referring to the Delhi rape case of 2013 which became a landmark turning point of crimes against women.

The incident of this crime happened to be reported just a few kilometers from Jabrauli village, which as visited by the former US president Bill Clinton. While Bill Clinton sang praises of prime minister Narendra Modi saying, "I was impressed with Modi's economic policies,"  comments from Mulayam Singh Yadav are just another reminder of the two tangent directions in which India is headed. On one hand we celebrate our progress and at the same time have lost the amount of heinous cases of crimes against women.

The Samajwadi party chief has a previous history for making misogynist comments. "Handing death sentence for rape is not fair...boys make mistakes... there will be changes in the law if we come to power." he is still associated with this statement, and it seems like he will soon go on to be known as the minister with the most controversial statements.
