One year after the Uri attack, India is no-where near apprehending the real culprits, but the attack has proved to be a

turning point in India's relations with Pakistan. India has hardened its stand against terror attacks and terror groups operating from Pakistan. Efforts are being made to expose Pakistan's continued support to terror outfits, which is turning out to be a major threat to peace and stability in the region.

Uri attack: High number of casualties left nation angry
On September 18 last year, heavily armed terrorists attacked the army base in north Kashmir early morning on Sunday. The death toll turned out to be very high as 19 soldiers lost their lives. Indian soldiers killed four terrorists in the retaliatory fire. The terrorists attacked the army base around 5:30 am when the changeover of troops was taking place. Naturally, the army was not in a good position to retaliate and which resulted in higher number of casualties.

How Uri attack changed India's stance: Surgical strikes
On 29 September, eleven days after the Uri attack, India carried out surgical strikes on terror launch pads in Pakistan-occupired Kashmir. India also launched a diplomatic offensive to expose Islamabad's involvement in spreading terror in the region.  However, Pakistan denied any surgical strikes had been carried out. Pakistan even went to the United Nations to claim that  India was lying about conducting surgical strikes.

NIA probe continues, long battle ahead

The NIA has made little headway in the probe into the terror case. A few months ago, the agency sent a Letter Rogatory (LR) to Pakistan, seeking its response on seizures made after the Uri attack.According to media reports based on sources, the request contained details of medicines, clothes, shoes, accessories, and DNA of one of the terrorists, identified as Abu Anas.

Lashkar-e-Taiba posters in Gujranwala
In October last year, posters appeared in the Pakistani town of Gujranwala announcing that the Lashkar-e-Taiba will hold the last rites in absentia for one of the four terrorists who attacked the Indian Army’s 12 Brigade at Uri. The event was postponed after massive pressure from India raising the matter on the international platform.

Pakistan based terror groups named in BRICS declaration

Earlier this months, for the first time, Pakistan-based terror groups like the LeT and the JeM were named in the Summit declaration of the BRICS countries that also asserted that those responsible for committing, organizing or supporting terrorist acts must be held accountable. In a significant diplomatic win for India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was joined by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Michael Temer and South African President Jacob Zuma in strongly denouncing terror activities of such groups, as they expressed determination to collectively fight the scourge.

The United States has warned Pakistan to stop being safe heavens for terror outfits. Now BRICS has put further shame on Pakistan. After Uri attack, India is in no mood to let Pakistan off the hook on terror front.
