The text of the UPA government’s resolution on Sri Lanka will be first approved by DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi before it is moved in Parliament, a senior party MP said on Tuesday.

The senior DMK member of the Lok Sabha told DNA that the government had not got back to the party till Tuesday evening with the text of the resolution.

The DMK leader said that without a resolution a debate on the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils would not be of any use as a short-duration debate last week proved. He argued that the government has to move the resolution. The text is likely to be worked out by finance minister P Chidambaram, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid and parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath in consultation with prime minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

Meanwhile, sources in the rival AIADMK say the DMK finds the Congress to be useless baggage and it is looking for ways of dropping it.  An AIADMK leader argued that the DMK could not have left the government over the issue of increase in prices of petrol and diesel, and that it found the Sri Lankan Tamil issue to be a deeply evocative one.
