In a bid to expand the penetration of Aadhaar number in your life, thegovernment is planing to make it mandatory for registering all the land deals in the country.
The government has made it mandatory for many other public schemes like provident fund of employees and direct cash transfer of subsidy to the poor. The move, to introduce Aadhaar in land registration is expected to curb the menace of ‘benaami’ property registration by the rich and the affluent. The ministry of rural development has proposed an amendment to the Registration Act, 1908, which if accepted, will introduce a number of changes in the act.
“Registration of land is the most disputed issue in the country. People use the route of litigation to usurp properties and since a lot of land deeds are not registered with the government, it becomes difficult to figure out the real owner of the land. With the help of Aadhaar no. it would be easy to establish the identity of the person,” said a senior official in the government.
Currently, there is no provision for the active computerisation of land records. The government also plan to create an online database. While, getting an Aadhaar number is not mandatory in the country, the government is gradually making it part of all the important schemes where an
individual has to deal with the government department.
Earlier this year, the government had made it mandatory for all the new Provident Fund Account holders to produce an Aadhaar number as identity proof. The government has also linked its benefit transfer schemes for the Below Poverty Line people with the Aadhaar number.
