His ‘escape’ could be straight out of Ripley’s Believe It or Not.
A rape accused posing as an accident victim hoodwinked the police and flew to Jammu in a state chopper, also used by the chief minister, only to be caught again. He also got Rs5,000 as ex-gratia compensation (given to accident victims).
Mohammad Parvez, 26, was on the run after he was booked for rape on Thursday night. On Friday, he went to Rajouri hospital to nurse bruises allegedly inflicted on him by the rape victim. On the same day, a bus fell into a gorge, killing 15 and injuring 24 others in Mandir Gala area of Rajouri district.
The accident victims were brought to Rajouri hospital of which 10 seriously injured were flown to Jammu hospital in a government chopper for further treatment.
Police said Parvez took the advantage of the situation and posed as an accident victim.
The doctors felt Parvez had suffered serious internal injuries as he groaned with pain and so, suggested that he be flown to Jammu.
“It was entirely based on what the doctors told us. Parvez intermingled with the injured and in the confusion, got airlifted,” said Danish Rana, deputy inspector general of police, Rajouri-Poonch range.
After landing in Jammu and getting Rs5,000, Parzez vanished into thin air. When the police reached Rajouri hospital, they realised a man by his name was airlifted to Jammu.
“The police reached Jammu hospital, but could not find anyone by his name. After getting information about his whereabouts, he was arrested from Manjakote on Sunday evening,” said a police officer.
The police have ordered a probe into the incident.
