Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi called for coordination in the Congress and vowed to introduce a system of rewards and penalties for the office bearers. In his first impressions and the analysis after his series of meetings with office bearers, state unit chiefs and MPs, Gandhi also assured to bridge communication gaps between the office bearers and the top party leadership.
The Congress scion had started a series of interactions after being anointed as No2 in the party. He said he would soon convene a combine meeting of the AICC general secretaries, secretaries and PCC chiefs and general secretaries for developing a system for better coordination.
He had invited general secretaries, secretaries and chief of various departments at the party's Rakabganj Road "war room" here. Stressing on the office-bearers to draw up a list of the time-bound and result-oriented works, he wanted them to hold regular meetings to solve the problems together. He told them instead of trying to manage matters single-handedly as it happens with most of the general secretaries, inculcate a culture of consultation and coordination. “What use having so many party secretaries when they are not given any work, he asked while calling for the regular interaction of the general secretaries and the secretaries,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi told the gathered office-bearers that he has firmed up with a view that there is no lack of talents in the party but the Congress suffers because of no coordination. He also noticed that those with merit are not rewarded and affirmed that "this will not do."
He also asked incharge of the state affairs to ensure that the state units conduct regular meetings and that the office-bearers in the state and district units are given specific roles and responsibilities instead of just two or three leaders running the show.
Meanwhile, Rahul has taken up yet another responsibility of coordinating with leaders of the UPA allies. Over past few days, he had already held consultations with Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, DMK supremo M Karunanidhi's MP daughter Kanimozhi and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh and his MP son Jayant.
