A man beheaded another and then walked for over a kilometer with the severed head to surrender to the police.

A man beheaded another and then walked for over a kilometer with the severed head to
surrender to the police.

The incident occurred at Sarani village in northern Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Wednesday morning.

Mekudin Tero, an Adivasi, beheaded his neighbour Laxman Sorey, also an Adivasi and a quack, with an axe. The assailant then held the decapitated head in one hand and walked for over a kilometer to surrender to the Dalohat police outpost.

The police said the assailant had been arrested.

“He said during interrogation that he is suffering from mental problems. But given the manner in which he talks, it doesn’t appear he has any mental problems,” Lakhimpur superintendent of police Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan told DNA.

“He perpetrated the attack in an inebriated state. He said he had killed Laxman Sorey to
settle old scores,” Bhuyan added.

The locals said Mekudin had killed Laxman in a fit of rage after the quack’s medicines failed to improve the assailant’s condition.

“Mekudin was visiting Laxman since November. He had paid money to the quack several times by selling livestock. He was furious for sometime after Laxman’s medicines failed to improve his condition. So, he killed Laxman in a fit of rage,” some locals said.

The victim’s family members were nearby but before they could intervene, Mekudin went about with his job, they added.
