NK Kalia, the father of Captain Saurabh Kalia, who was martyred at the height of the 1999 Kargil War, has hailed the execution of Afzal Guru, the mastermind of the December 13, 2001, terror strike on the Indian Parliament.
Kalia shared his views with media persons at Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, over the weekend.
He was speaking shortly after Afzal Guru was executed inside New Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
“It is very soothing news to every Indian nationalist, who cares for India,” said NK Kalia.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yashwant Sinha said in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, “There is no doubt that we should give credit to honourable President instead of the government because he didn’t keep the matter pending and expeditiously took the decision. The Indian government was forced to hang Afzal Guru."
Guru’s execution could help the ruling Congress party deflect opposition criticism of being soft on militancy, as it gears up for a series of state elections this year and a general election due by 2014, while grappling with an economic slowdown.
