Substance abuse claimed another victim when a 18-year-old girl, a resident in Mangalore, committed suicide late Saturday night after her parents refused to give her money to buy drugs.
Sneha Upadhya, a former student of Sharada Vidyalaya PU college, was found hanging in her room late Saturday night. Sneha had allegedly been taking drugs for more than a year. When her parents found out about her drug habit and the bad company she had been keeping, they discontinued her studies and put her on treatment for drug abuse.
But Sneha was unable to kick the habit. When her parents refused to give in to her demands for money to buy drugs, Sneha took the extreme step of killing herself.
According to college authorities, Sneha had ceased to be the student of their college six months ago. She was said to be very subdued and well-mannered.
Following the incident, district in-charge minister CT Ravi has asked district and police officials to step up vigil over rampant drug abuse in educational institutions in the city.
