The state home department has accepted gambling kingpin Dinesh Kalgi’s plea that he be allowed to stay in Ahmedabad for medical treatment and has permitted him to stay in the city for 15 days.
Sources said that Kalgi, who was externed by Ahmedabad police, had given details of his health problems in his application and requested that he be permitted to stay in the city for medical check-up.
“Although the home department has allowed Kalgi to stay in the city for 15 days, we will keep an eye on his movements,” said AM Desai, PI, prevention of crime branch (PCB).
Kalgi’s had been externed by the Ahmedabad police for two years from Ahmedabad city, Ahmedabad district, Gandhinagar and Mehsana.
Last year, IPS officer V Chandrashekhar, who was then DCP, Zone-1, had raided Kalgi’s Sudama resort in Paldi and arrested more than 60 people who were found gambling there.
Later, Kalgi was arrested by the Navrangpura police along with Mahindra Patel, co-owner of Sudama resort, and both were charged under PASA. However, after going through the legal process, they were released by the police.
A number of police officials, including police inspectors BK Purohit and AS Parmar of Ellisbridge, were suspended for being indulgent towards Kalgi, thus allowing him to carry on with his illegal activities. Earlier, the police had busted Kalgi’s farm at Sola.
