Gujaratis are tired of being labelled non-sporty. Even the authorities want to shed the tag, as is evident from the marathon and cyclothon events

Gujaratis are tired of being labelled non-sporty. Even the authorities want to shed the tag, as was evident three weeks ago at the success of the third edition of Sabarmati Marathon. People had defied the chilly weather and came in large numbers to make the run a grand success.

And now after running, Ahmedabad will display its cycling prowess as the city holds its maiden cyclothon this Sunday. This is the first such event of its kind in Gujarat. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has organised the event in association with Ahmedabad Bicycling Club.

As many as 4,879 cyclists will participate in three categories – Century Race, Half Century race and dream Ride. The organisers have received 3,989 entries for the dream ride, leaving 294 for the half-century (48km) and 247 for the full run (105km).

The state government and the civic body want to make the residents fit and understand the importance of exercise.

The organisers want to promote the sport as an activity which is physically, economically and environment friendly.

City-based educationist and entrepreneur, Manjula Pooja Shroff, is a much vocal and active supporter of the cycling event. The health-conscious not only participated in the marathon, but also registered her in the half-century cyclothon event. “Cycling is very good for health, especially for the lower part of the body, and knees in particular. Running affects the knees and thus I was suggested riding,” says Shroff. “It’s almost a year since I started this hobby, and am addicted! Her previous cycling experience was during her school days.

Today, Shroff bikes for about 50km a week on her eight-gear Trek 1.5 and enjoys the ride with other members of her group. They cycle to Thol three times a week.
