An army officer on Tuesday lodged a rape complaint against the security PI of Gujarat high court, Farooq Qureshi, with the women’s department of the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB). She had earlier submitted an application in this regard based on which the DCB detained Qureshi from his Gandhinagar residence on Monday.
“In her complaint, Anita (name changed) alleged that Qureshi forced her to convert into Islam. We have arrested Qureshi,” said KN Patel, ACP.
Anita, a divorcee and mother of two, currently lives in Dehradun. She came down to meet the city police commissioner on Monday along with her lawyer. In an application, she told the police that Qureshi had raped her repeatedly between November 1 and December 6, 2012. The application was converted to FIR on Tuesday and the case was transferred to the DCB.
According to case details, previously deputed as a major at the medical corps department in Bhuj, Anita fell in love with a field officer who was already married. But their relationship met with a bitter end after the officer’s wife got to know about it. She insulted him in front of other field officers. Unable to bear the humiliation, the officer ended his life.
Things worsened for Anita as she was held responsible for the suicide and a case was registered against her under section 306 of the IPC. Anita subsequently filed a cross petition in Gujarat high court. There, she met Qureshi for the first time.
Qureshi helped her in the case financially and over a period of time, a cordial relationship developed between the two. Investigation revealed that Anita would even send Qureshi air tickets to visit Dehradun. It is learned that they had plans to get married and Anita had converted to Islam. However, Qureshi started avoiding her after some time.
Finally, Anita registered a police complaint against Qureshi.
Meanwhile, Qureshi, who is under detention, has denied the allegation and said that Anita has lodged a false complaint against him. In statement given to the police, he said that Anita used to blackmail him.
