Here is some good news for premier and oldest engineering institutes of the state looking for a greater say in the running of these temples technical of education.
State government is in the process of granting autonomy to eight engineering colleges in state, which also includes the state’s leading college in the stream, LD College of Engineering.
The step will allow these institutes to expand their academic horizons and regain their lost glory of producing sharp young engineers, who used to be absorbed by big names like NASA and companies in Silicon Valley.
Principal secretary of state education department Hasmukh Adhia said on Saturday that government is in the process of granting autonomy to these colleges.
“We have issued a GR (Government Notification) for this as well. The engineering colleges like LD College of Engineering in Ahmedabad and Lukhdhirji Engineering College, Morbi, will be granted autonomy.”
He also added that it has been agreed in principle that all these institutes will be having their own board of governors, which will be headed by an eminent person from the society as its chairman.
However, in the begging these institutions will have operational and academic autonomy only.
“It will be operational and academic autonomy, where the institutes can decide their own curriculum. They will be given specific finance by the government to run their operations. They can raise additional funds from outside also.”
