The carcass of a dugong was washed ashore the Mithapur reef close to the Marine National Park in Jamnagar. The carcass of a female dugong was found in the afternoon.
A source in the forest department said a post mortem will be carried out on the dugong to know the cause of its death. He said that the carcass of another dugong was washed ashore in 2011. In the 2012, a live dugong sighting was reported off the coast of Okha. It was believed to be the first such rare sighting in about 30 years where a live dugong was sighted and photographed.
A study by the GEER foundation in 2008-2010 titled 'Status of dugong in India' estimated the mammal’s population in Gujarat to be around 15. However, no live sightings were recorded during the study.
