Telecommunications minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday said nationwide mobile number portability will be effective from February. The PM said the new policy will address concerns of investors.
He said the rural-urban divide in penetration of telecom services will be narrowed as the policy envisages 70% rural penetration by 2017 and 100% by 2020.
He said increase in broadband connectivity and GDP growth are directly correlated, and that the advent of smartphones and tablets would spur growth, provided India strengthens its own telecom manufacturing capabilities.
