Ahmedabad traffic solutions by Indo-Japan team

A three-member delegation of Indo-Japanese Working Group visited Ahmedabad on Friday and gave their views on improving traffic conditions in the city by implementing latest technology. The delegation included former Japanese ambassador Yasukuni Enoki, who works closely with Ministry of Urban Development.

According to Mukesh Parihar, a delegate accompanying Enoki, the purpose of the visit was to study the transportation system in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. “We met different stakeholders of both cities and understood the transport system, including Metro rail and BRTS. We also made suggestions to top city police officers for better traffic management,” he said.

Parihar added that a national-level seminar of Integrated Transport System will be held in Ahmedabad in February. These ideas will then be discussed and finalised for implementation. The suggestions put forward by the working group included implementation of Vehicle Detection System (VDS), cloud-based control system accessible from tablets and LED display for traffic-related announcements.

The VDS will enable the traffic signals to start or stop according to the flow of traffic at the junctions. With the use of VDS, sensors on traffic junctions will detect the flow automatically and make changes in the duration of signal light.

With the use of cloud-based control system, traffic cops can receive real time data and information regarding traffic flow on their tablet. This will enable them to respond quickly to traffic jams and other emergencies.

The LED display will solve two purposes. On one hand, these display panels can provide details to commuters about alternate routes or traffic jams ahead while on the other, they can earn revenue by way of advertisements.
