Thursday was unlike any other day at Teen Darwaja. The place that would have otherwise been a bustling market witnessed negligible rush, closed shops, police points, vehicles of Rapid Action Force, flag march, ashes of burnt bikes and camping senior cops. A large number of police officials were stationed in the area since Wednesday night.
Sources said that around 200 personnel each from State Reserve Police (SRP) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed to ensure police presence. Apart from that, teams of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) and local police too were vigilant throughout the day.
Ajay Tomar, JCP, Sector 1, affirmed that the situation was under control and a flag march was also held. He further said, “There is enough police bandobast in the area and the teams are searching for the miscreants.” Apart from Tomar, other IPS officers including Manoj Ninama, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 2; Nirlipt Roy, assistant commissioner of police, DCB; and Himanshu Shukla, deputy commissioner of police, DCB, were present at Teen Darwaja throughout the day.
The members of the minority community, however, were seen blaming the rioters for disturbing their business. “The festive season is approaching and it is shopping time. The recent riots will directly affect our turnover,” said Ismail Sheikh, a street vendor. The owner of one of the oldest shops in the locality said, “No one should be spared by the police. Each and every rioter should be behind bars so that people think twice before disturbing the peace.” The business activity in the market was negligible and most of the food joints on the roads remained closed.
