Out for shopping in Prahladnagar area city, Begum Farheen Sultana, 68, wife of Sultan Nawab Salabatkhan Babi of Balasinor, got the experience of being cheated by Amdavadi thugs.
The incident took place on September 28 when a thief distracted her and stole a purse from the car. Primary investigation reveals that at least two persons were involved in the theft.
Sultana was accompanied by members of her family. After parking their car near Kemps corner close to Prahladnagar garden, the rest of the family went out while Sultana stayed back.
According to case details, the driver was strolling near the car when a man informed her about cash lying outside following which she called out to the driver. He came and inspected the spot but could not find anything. Not satisfied, Sultana peeped out of the window. Taking advantage, the other man pulled out her purse lying unattended.
By the time Sultana turned, the duo had gone missing along with the purse. A case of cheating was registered with Anandnagar police.
Sultana has told the police that her purse contained Rs50,000 in cash and jewellery, totally worth Rs2.5 lakh, besides two passports, driving licence and pan card.
Police records say that in September alone, 30 cases of thefts after distraction have been registered. Going by the modus operandi of the thefts, police believe that the same gang, most pro is involved in these cases.
According to them, there are six members of the gang who move about in a Maruti van. They are not ruling out the possibility of this vehicle being stolen. Most of these thefts take place in Satellite, Vastrapur, Prahladnagar, Anandnagar.
According to police, the gang conducts a quick recce and zeroes in on its targets. In one such visit to a particular area, the thieves target at least five victims. They either puncture tyres or drop some cash close to the car. Their van is parked close to the victim’s to facilitate quick exit.
Despite raiding guest houses, highway hotels and other probable places, police have been unable to get any lead.
