The Gujarat University headquarters was witness to high-voltage drama on Friday after dozens of Congress members gheraoed in-charge registrar BV Patel to demand declaration of syndicate elections.
Though the term of the current syndicate ends on August 30, vice-chancellor Dr Mukul Shah is yet to declare elections for the new body. On Friday afternoon, a group led by Congress syndicate members Narhari Amin, Digvijaysinh Gohil and Manish Doshi came to the GU. The Congress members wanted to make a representation to Shah, but since he was not present the team vented their ire on Patel.
“At the last syndicate meeting, it was decided that the election date would be announced by August 3. However, no announcement has been made,” Congress members stated in a memorandum.
They alleged that the decision to postpone elections was at the behest of the state government. But BJP syndicate member Girish Chaudhary rubbished the charges.
Adding fuel to the fire was the presence of three BJP syndicate members in the V-C’s chamber though the V-C himself was not present.
“This is the V-C’s office, why should BJP members make it their meeting place?” the protesting Congress members said. In a direct fallout of the ruckus, in-charge registrar Patel offered to step down from his post.
Dr Shah too wanted to follow suit.
