Tom Cruise is famous for doing insane stunts for most of his movies. Especially the action franchise like Jack Reacher and Mission: Impossible. He ups the ante with every new movie and Mission: Impossible - Fallout will showcase one of the most daring stunts he has done so far.
It is now a well-known anecdote associated with sixth Mission Impossible movie that Tom Cruise broke his ankle while jumping out of one high story building to the roof of another. But a behind-the-scenes feature for Mission: Impossible - Fallout, shows how Tom Cruise pushed his body to its limits to get one of the shots for the movie.
Tom Cruise became the first actor to do the HALO jump on camera, which has always been on his bucket list.
HALO stands for 'High-Altitude, Low-Open.' Military jumpers dive from 25,000 ft and open the parachute when they are below 2000 ft to land undetected in foreign countries.
This skydive needed Tom Cruise to prepare at world's largest wind tunnels. The actor did over 100 jumps to get the desired cut for the scene. He and the crew did five jumps a day that included 3 C-17 jumps.
Cruise and the crew had to acclimatize their bodies to avoid the decompression sickness. They inhaled pure oxygen for 20 minutes on the ground. A special helmet was prepared for Cruise that worked as a prop too.
Because it was a nighttime scene, they needed to shoot as close to the sunset as possible. That meant they could film only one shot a day with a window of only three minutes! With a plane that was travelling at 165 mph, Cruise and the cameraman jumped at the speed of 200 mph.
The joy of finishing the scene is evident on the faces of those who were involved and Cruise is happiest of them all.
