The Academy Awards is an event that everyone looks forward to making big fashion statements, however, actress Natalie Portman made both, a statement in fashion as well as feminism. At the 2020 Oscars, Natalie made a bold statement donning a black and gold Dior Haute Couture outfit with a special touch. The dress was embroidered in gold lettering on her cape with the last name of the female directors who were not nominated for their films, Scafaria, Wang, Gerwig, Diop, Heller, Matsoukas, Har'el and Sciamma.

For the uninitiated, none of the female directors Lorene Scarfaria for Hustlers, Lulu Wang for The Farewell, Greta Gerwig for Little Women, Mati Diop for Atlantics, Marielle Heller for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Melina Matsoukas for Queen & Slim, Alma Har'el for Honey Boy, and Celine Sciamma for Portrait of a Lady on Fire were nominated for the category for best director.

According to reports, in the history of the coveted Academy Awards, only five directors have been nominated so far in the best director category namely Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, Lina Wertmuller for Seven Beauties, Jane Campion for The Piano, Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation, and Greta for Lady Bird.

Natalie has been known to make statements about gender inequality at award shows as at the 2018 Golden Globes when she presented the best director category, she said, "And here are the all-male nominees."

Her poignant fashion statement, today too, was appreciated on social media heavily. One user wrote, "Her cape gives me life. I love her. Women directors have been snubbed time and time again and it's enough!! Give them the representation and attention they deserve!"
