May the fourth is here! A day of celebration for Star Wars fans across the globe. While the fans of the franchise do not need a single day to express their love for its innumerable characters, it is just an excuse for them to dress up, and to celebrate the glory of the galaxy far, far away.
The social media is today flooded with "May the 4th be with you" greetings and the pictures of people dressed up as their favourite character. Before we bring some of the best tweets, we dive into the history of Star Wars Day.
According to starwars.com, one of the earliest known records of “May the 4th” used in popular culture is in 1979.
Author Alan Arnold, who wrote a book on the making of "The Empire Strikes Back" remembers that the phrase was first used by the British Conservative Party after former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher won the general elections in 1979.
“Margaret Thatcher has won the election and become Britain’s first woman prime minister. To celebrate their victory her party took a half page of advertising space in the London Evening News. This message, referring to the day of victory, was ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,’ further proof of the extent to which Star Wars has influenced us all,” Arnold says.
The pun, which started as a political ad cleverly using the phrase "May the Force be with you" soon became popular with Star Wars fans across the universe.
After the rise of the internet and social media, Star Wars fans around the world started celebrating May the 4th as a day to connect with one another each year. While the idea to celebrate Star Wars Day on May 4 did not start with Lucasfilm, the film company that created the Star Wars universe, has now adopted the date as well.
On this day, we bring to you some of the wishes from the universe of social media:
