Jessica Chastain has been vocal about calling out Harvey Weinstein and supporting the sexual assault victims since the matter came to light. When her co-star on The Martian, Matt Damon's name popped up in a report suggesting he helped kill a story in 2004 about the Indie mogul's reported misconduct, she did feel disappointed.

On Wednesday, Damon denied the reports saying he had no idea about the story. He said Weinstein had asked him to call The Wrap founder Sharon Waxman to vouch for Fabrizio Lombardo, who ran Miramax's Italian office, the distribution company for Weinstein, and Damon agreed to call the reporter.

"As I recall, her piece just said that Russell and I had called and relayed our experience with Fabrizio," said Damon.

Waxman corroborated Damon's statement.

Chastain then took to Twitter show her support for her co-star. "I've spent time with him on The Martian and he's a really good guy," Chastain tweeted.

Weinstein was fired late Sunday from his own film studio, three days after a bombshell New York Times report alleged that the Oscar-winning producer behind such hits as The King's Speech and The Artist had preyed on young women hoping to break into the industry.

Post the controversy, Weinstein was sacked from The Weinstein Company (TWC) as co-chairman.

Big Hollywood names such as Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence and Judi Dench have joined the growing chorus against the producer, criticising his behaviour as "indefensible" and "horrifying".
