The makers have released the first look of legendary actor Tom Hanks as popular television personality Fred Rogers in the upcoming biopic.

In the picture, the Oscar-winning star can be seen smiling at the camera wearing a bright red sweater and sneakers - recreating the icon's signature look.

The image was shared by Sony Pictures on Twitter with the caption, "Tom Hanks is Mister Rogers, coming to a neighbourhood near you October 2019."

Rogers was the late host of the beloved children's series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, which aired between 1968 to 2001 and won four Emmys. He died in 2003 at the age of 74.

The movie is a chronicle of the real-life friendship that developed between Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod (Matthew Rhys), who famously formed an emotional bond with the television host while profiling him for Esquire magazine in 1998.
