While most actors enjoy facing the camera, there are those who occasionally like to step behind the lens too. The latest star to announce her filmmaking plans is Olivia Wilde. She will make her feature directing debut with Booksmart, a film about two teenagers who realise they wasted their high school years focusing on their academics. Olivia will be one of many female actors to add filmmaking to their resume.

ANGELINA JOLIE

Angelina, who began her career as a child actor starring alongside her father Jon Voight, has gone on to act in several films since earning Golden Globe awards and an Oscar. She made her directorial debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey, which was followed by Unbroken and By the Sea

BRIE LARSON

Brie began her career  doing TV series and later, brief roles in films. She earned an Academy Award for Best Actress as well as a Golden Globe for Room. Last year, the actor made her directorial debut with Unicorn Store, a comedy in which she stars herself, about a young artist who is kicked out of art school.

KRISTEN STEWART

Kristen is best known for her role of Bella in The Twilight Saga film series, which won her worldwide recognition. The actress went on to do a wide variety of films including Clouds of Sils Maria, which got her critical acclaim. She directed the short film Come Swim in 2017 that was screened at the Cannes Film Festival as well as the Sundance Film Fest.

DREW BARRYMORE

Drew shot into the spotlight for her role of a young girl in  Steven Spielberg’s film ET. She also featured in a number of romcoms such as The Wedding Singer, Never Been Kissed and 50 First Dates. She turned filmmaker with Whip it, a sports comedy-drama film and Choose or Lose Presents: The Best Place to Start, a documentary on youth voting. 

JADA PINKETT SMITH

Jada got into acting with a number of television shows, the most prominent being A Different World. She later went on to star in two sequels of The Matrix. The actor who’s also performed in a metal band, directed the movie The Human Contract, which starred Idris Elba and The Will Smith Music Video Collection, a video documentary on her husband. 

GRETA GERWIG

Greta has acted in a number of films such as Damsels in Distress, To Rome with Love and Jackie. She also co-directed Nights and Weekends with Joe Swanberg. The actress is currently in the news for her solo directorial Lady Bird that has been nominated for two Academy Awards. 

NATALIE PORTMAN

Natalie has a vast  filmography including roles in Star Wars: Episode I —The Phantom Menace, Closer, The Other Boleyn Girl, No Strings Attached and Jackie where she portrayed Jackie Kennedy. In  2015, she directed A Tale of Love and Darkness, which is about the early years of the State of Israel, and a young man’s relationship with his mother. She also directed a segment of New York, I Love You.
