Critics' Choice Awards 2018: 'Shape of Water,' 'Big Little Lies' win big!

Here's how the Critics' Choice Awards unfolded for the year 2018.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association and Broadcast Television Journalists Association handed out prizes at the 23rd annual Critics' Choice Awards tonight, honouring the best in movies and television. The show was hosted by X-Men star Olivia Munn.

Call me by your Name and Get Out were some of the early winners at the star-studded event. Both the movies went on to claim the screenplay honours, while Jordan Peele's Get Out beat Guillermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water to win the Best Sci-fi/horror film.

Meanwhile, actor James Franco won the Best Actor in a Comedy for his role in The Disaster Artist, but skipped the Critics` Choice Awards ceremony because of the sexual misconduct allegations on the actor.

 

Coco also won a pair of awards, for Best Song and Animated Feature, while The Florida Project star Brooklynn Prince won the best young actor/actress award.

For television, Walton Goggins and Mayim Bialik won the supporting actor and actress prizes for Vice Principals and The Big Bang Theory, respectively. HBO's The Wizard of Lies won the best movie made for TV. David Harbour won best supporting actor in a drama series for Stranger Things.

Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgard took home the Supporting Actor honours for TV movie or miniseries for their roles in Big Little Lies. The show also picked up best-limited series.

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman took home the trophy for Best Actress in a Limited Series. Kidman thanked 'all of her children' after winning the award. "I wanna thank all of my children who show me so much love," she said.

This comes after the star got slammed for failing to mention her two adopted children, Isabella and Connor with ex-Tom Cruise, at the Golden Globes.

In her speech, the 50-year-old-actress  added, "I love being an actor. Thank you for letting me do it all the way through to this age and beyond. It really is an incredible honour."

She also paid gushing tribute to her Big Little Lies co-stars and explained, "Every actor in this room knows you are only as good as the other actors you work with."

 

Sterling K Brown and Elisabeth Moss continued their golden run in the industry as both actors went on to win the awards for Best Actors in their respective categories.

After winning the trophy, Brown said, "I speak on behalf of my show that's not the darkest, or the sexiest, but we have a lot of heart. And in some dark times right now, it's nice to be a part of something that reminds us that we're all in this thing called life together."

Sterling K Brown won the award for his role in hit-drama series This is Us. He also won the Golden Globe in Best Actor category at this year's star-studded ceremony.

Elisabeth Moss also doubled the victory after taking home the award in the same category at Golden Globes for The Handmaid's Tale.

Moss thanked critics for 'embracing the show from the beginning' as she accepted the award. Moss' co-star Ann Dowd picked up Best Supporting actress in a drama series.

The Big Sick won the award for Best Comedy Movie. Ted Danson took home the trophy for best actor in a comedy for his turn as Michael in comedy The Good Place.

Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel won the Best Actress in Comedy (TV) while the show picked up the Best comedy series award as well.

Ewan McGregor was declared winner for playing a double role in the third season of Fargo. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was selected as the Best Talk Show, while Rick and Morty was announced as Best Animated Series.

RuPaul, Shark Tank, The Voice, and Born This Way took the top honours for Reality Television shows.

2017's blockbuster film Wonder Woman has won the award for Best Action Movie Lead actor Gal Gadot, who received the #SeeHer Award at the ceremony for her portrayal of the Amazonian Princess, took to social media to thank Critics for the honour.

She tweeted, 


Margot Robbie took home the award in the 'Best Actress in a Comedy' category, for her portrayal of figure skater Tonya Harding in the movie I, Tonya. This was her second win at the annual awards show, after being named Best Actress in an action movie in 2016 for Suicide Squad.

Guillermo del Toro's fantasy romance The Shape of Water walked away with four wins, including Best Picture and Best Director.

While accepting the Best Picture honour, filmmaker del Toro praised the women who made The Shape Of Water possible, including stars Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer, reports the Entertainment Weekly.

 

The Golden Globe winner received the honour for his critically-acclaimed portrayal of Winston Churchill. The movie also won Best Hair & Makeup trophy.

Frances McDormand won the best actress award for her portrayal of a mother seeking answers for her daughter's death in the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Her co-star Sam Rockwell continued the winning streak by picking up the Best Supporting Actor award. The movie also won the Best  Acting Ensemble.

Nobody was surprised in the crowd when Allison Janney bagged the trophy for Best Supporting Actress for her role in I, Tonya

Legendary Roger Deakins won Best Cinematography for his work in Blade Runner 2049. Paul Denham Austerberry, Shane Vieau, and Jeff Melvin won the Best Production design for Shape of Water.

It was a tie between Paul Machliss, Jonathan Amos of Baby Driver and Lee Smith of Dunkirk for Best Editing. Mark Bridges of Daniel Day-Lewis' Phantom Thread won Best Costume Design.
