It appears that the superheroes of Justice League need some lessons in handling themselves in public. After Ben Affleck, who plays Batman, faced criticism for groping actress Hilarie Burton, it is now the turn of Jason Momoa, who plays Aquaman to face criticism.

Momoa, who played the mighty Khal Drogo, in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, has been slammed on social media for his remarks on rape that were uttered during a 2011 Comic Con convention.

During the discussion, Momoa said his character "raped beautiful women". In the wake of producer Harvey Weinstein's alleged raping and sexual harassment of female co-workers and actors, Momoa's statement has not gone down well. "But as far as sci-fi and fantasy, I love that genre because there are so many things you can do, like rip someone's tongue out of their throat and get away with it and rape beautiful women," he said at 2011 Comic-Con.

His remarks made the crowd laugh at that time, while fellow cast members, including Lena Headey and Kit Harington, covered their faces in assumed embarrassment.
The actor eventually took to Instagram on Friday to issue a public apology.

"I awoke in Australia to the justified reactions by many people to a distasteful joke I made years ago in Hall H for which I am sorry. I am still severely disappointed in myself at the insensitivity of my remarks that day," Momoa posted on Instagram. I know my sincerest apology won't take away those hurtful words. Rape and sexual harassment can reach anyone and I have seen first hand its painful torment among members of my own family and friends. I made a truly tasteless comment. It is unacceptable and I sincerely apologize with a heavy heart for the words I said," he added.

Earlier, Ben Affleck has apologised for an incident in 2003 in which he "acted inappropriately" towards actress Hilarie Burton.

Burton claimed Affleck, 45, groped her when she was a host of MTV's TRL in 2003. "I acted inappropriately toward Ms Burton and I sincerely apologise," Affleck tweeted.
