Cannes Film Festival mixes the glam and glitz with the art of film making. They take their movies just as seriously as they take the red carpet appearances. The festival has showcased some strong contenders for Oscars over the years.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious festivals internationally. With a number of big names making an appearance on the red carpet and a list of brilliant films as part of the line-up, Cannes is the place to be.

The race for the Oscars starts as early as Berlin Film Festival, even before the Academy Award winners of that year are announced. Then there is Sundance Film Festival. But the real business of it starts taking shape when the glitterati gather at the French Riviera. This is followed by releases at Venice, Toronto, London, Tribeca and then during the time that is known as the Awards Season.

The Academy Awards held every year recognise some of the best in the industry, and there are some films that have managed to win accolades on both these platforms. From Cannes to Oscars, these films have made heads turn and how! 

Here’s a list of films that went on to win at the Oscars after a win at the Cannes Film Festival!

The Piano (1993):

Set in the mid-19th century New Zealand the film revolves around the relationship between a mute piano player and her daughter. The director of this masterpiece Jane Campion is the only female director till today to win the Palme d’Or. But that’s not all, she followed up with 3 Academy wins

Pulp Fiction (1994):

Quentin Tarantino, the critically acclaimed director has gathered a lot of accolades over the years. His sophomore film, Pulp Fiction won the Palme d’Or in the year in 1994 and was nominated for seven Oscars, winning one - for best original screenplay.

The Pianist (2002):

Directed by one of the most scandalous directors Roman Polanski, The Pianist is a critically acclaimed film which has won recognition across the globe. The biographical drama film is based on a World War II memoir by the Polish-Jewish pianist and composer Władysław Szpilman. The film won the Palme d’Or in 2002 and went on to win 3 Oscars including the best director

The Artist (2011):

Released in 2011, the Oscar-winning movie for the best picture, The Artist is one of the most popular films in the recent century. The French romantic comedy-drama directed by Michel Hazanavicius is black and white silent film that revolves around the relationship of an older silent film star and a rising young actress during the 1930’s. Actor Jean Dujardin won the award for the best actor fir role at Cannes that year.

Amour (2012):

Written and directed by Michael Haneke, the film is about an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad. The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and also won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards
