Right from season 1 of Game of Thrones, the makers made it clear that no character will be spared. It didn’t matter if it was the central character or a popular one, if George RR Martin wanted to, he could kill off any of them. Fans lived in constant fear, not knowing whether they should fall in love with any character at all. There were some cleverly laid out traps too. Like an emotional scene between a father daughter — Stannis-Shireen Baratheon and Jaime Lannister-Myrcella Baratheon, which would be followed by the death of the daughter. But then there were those deaths that made you want to cheer for Mr Martin. Yes, we are talking about King Joffrey and Ramsay Bolton. Here are the ones that had everyone at the edge of their seat...

Lord Eddard Stark (S1E9)

They are never going to kill him, fans were convinced when Joffrey Baratheon declared death sentence for Lord Eddard Stark. But his gruesome end came in the ninth episode that saw him being beheaded. Right then viewers knew this is going to be one game that’s not going to spare any character whether central or not, for the story to move ahead. Fans have lived in fear worried for the lives of their favourite men and women from the series since this episode.

Khal Drogo (S1E10)

Drogo has copper-coloured skin, black hair, and black eyes. When Jason Momoa stepped in to play the role, women just couldn’t get enough of the hunk. But in true George RR Martin style, he was killed off just as his romance with his wife Daenerys began to bloom. The fierce warrior is wounded in a war. A seemingly small wound festers and a deceit sees him in catatonic state. His wife decides to set him free by smothering him with a pillow.

The Red Wedding (S3E9)

Catelyn Stark and her son Robb are murdered brutally along with the pregnant Talisa Stark. After Edmure weds Roslin, Lord Walder hosts a feast for the highborn in one of his castles. As part of the bedding custom, Edmure and Roslin depart the hall after which a bloody massacre takes place. Robb’s death also marks the end of the northern rebellion, with Roose Bolton being named the Warden of the North.

King Joffrey (S4E2)

The Purple Wedding sees the death of King Joffrey Baratheon. While most deaths in GoT were mourned by fans, this was one death that the audience relished. A few hours after his wedding to Margaery Tyrell, the tyrant is poisoned during the wedding feast. Joffrey’s uncle, Tyrion Lannister, is arrested for the murder, though the actual orchestrators are Lord Petyr Baelish and Lady Olenna Tyrell.

Oberyn Martell (S4E8)

He may not have lost an entire season but his presence is remembered. He is in Westeros to seek vengeance for his dead sister and her children. He is known as the Red Viper. He managed to injure The Mountain with swipes of his spear that’s dipped in poison, but a moment’s mistakes finds him at the mercy of The Mountain, who squashes him to death, literally!

Ygritte (S4E9)

A fierce warrior who was quick with her wit and arrows. Her only undoing was her love for Jon Snow. During the war in the fourth episode, when confronted by Jon, Ygritte hesitates to shoot him, and is shot in the back by Olly, a boy whose father Ygritte previously killed. She dies in Jon’s arms and is later burned by Jon himself. A tragic death for this love story.

Princess Shireen Baratheon (S5E9)

A sweet moment shared by Shireen and her father Stannis Baratheon, made it seemed like this father-daughter will probably have a better relationship in the future. But in true GRR style, the next scene saw Shireen being burned at the stake. She cried out to her father for help, but guess what, he is ready to sacrifice his daughter if it can ensure him a chance to win the Iron throne. Looking at the cruel way in which she was killed, we almost rooted for the White Walkers.

Hodor (S6E5)

This is one death that no GoT fan can ever forgive the author and show makers for. The sweet bumbling big guy took care of Bran till his last breath. The two were inseparable after the Starks lost control of Winterfell. ‘Hold the door’, is a term that every GoT fan reveres. Hodor’s death sparked of series of memes on the internet.

Ramsay Bolton (S6E9)

A bastard son of Roose Bolton, Ramsay’s lust for blood is even stronger than his father’s (Roose Bolton). After taking Winterfell, he captured Theon Greyjoy and slowly tortured him into submission. He later marries Sansa Stark and tortured her. But she got her revenge when she saw him getting ripped apart by his own hungry dogs. Revenge, they say, is a dish best served cold!

Margaery Tyrell (S6E10)

Margaery Tyrell is the Queen who managed to outsmart Cersei. She was ambitious no doubt, but she was also everything that you would want in a Queen. But Cersei’s last move wiped out Margery as well as many other characters like the High Sparrow. Queen Margaery, you will be missed.
