Chennai: A four-month-old Nigerian child with Down's Syndrome and afflicted with a condition called complete a-v canal defect has been successfully operated on recently by the paediatric cardiac team at Apollo Children's Hospital.

"The child was ailing with a condition called complete a-v canal defect. This consists of two holes in heart with mitral and tricupspid valves possibly leaky as well", paediatric cardiologist Dr Muthukumaran told reporters.

He said the surgery was made more risky as the child has Down's Syndrome. "The child was investigated by 2D echo, 3D echo and catheterization and angiogram. The four-hour surgery involved closing of holes in the heart and repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves", he added.

Muthukumaran said the child was normal after surgery and was ready to be discharged after one week.
