Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad: Are you a diabetic? Are you more prone to diabetes? The answers to all these questions will be available and one will be able to know his/her health status once a national survey being carried out by the Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is over.

The idea behind the survey is to get authentic and fresh data on the status of people of India. The survey also involves Gujarat, as according to the medical experts, Gujaratis are more prone to diabetes.

What's even more important is that the fourth phase of the survey will focus on eight metros, including Ahmedabad and Pune, for a separate study related to 'complications because of diabetes'.

Dr V Mohan, scientific chairman, RSSDI, said: "There was an urgent need for such a study as we don't have a national data for diabetes. Also the surveys available are not done through the same method which can't be taken for the comparison with other states."
The survey is divided in four phases, the first three phases will be covering all the states of India whereas the fourth phase will focus exclusively on the metros and big cities having population of more than three million, added Mohan.

Commenting on the survey, Dr RM Anjana who is associated with the programme, said that for the survey 4,000 samples from all strata of society will be taken from each state. In the forth phase which will be undertaken in the metros, including Ahmedabad and Pune, a separate sample consisting of 6,000 people will be taken.

"In the survey, the samples will be completely new and therefore no secondary data will be taken into account. Those detected suffering from diabetes will be suggested where to go for the treatment based on his/her economic condition," said Anjana.
