For 23-year-old Angad Chandhok, life changed after getting diagnosed with type-1 diabetes. Diagnosed with diabetes in June 2013, Angad set his mind to not losing hope, and to fight back.

Interestingly, Angad diagnosed himself by learning about the symptoms on the internet. "Endocrinologists play an important role in diabetes management, but over a period of time we as patients learn so much about it by ourselves," says Angad.

Angad is a marathon runner and has participated in many full marathons. By taking a condition that needs management by the minute, along with a rigorous physical activity, Angad's purpose and achievements increase with every new day. He is now practicing for the upcoming Mumbai Marathon 2019.

Losing around 10 kgs of weight within a few months of his diagnosis and getting exhausted most of the time, he faced difficulty in playing his favorite sports. But he found a solution; checking sugar levels more often and doing trial and errors to get them in range. It is because of this that he overcame the challenges he faced in the initial years of his college days in IIT-Kanpur.

Speaking about the steps he took to control sugar levels, Angad said, “I learned about different insulin types and which one best suited my body and my lifestyle. I changed my eating habits by incorporating a high amount of protein in my diet."

Angad's passion to win over diabetes furthered. To overcome the stigma of the condition, Angad signed up for a trek with an adventure and sport’s club a few years ago. And took up the challenge of trekking at the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, Sikkim (4900m) in the year 2017.

“Even though I had lots of hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar levels) incidents during the trek, I managed to reach the top. That moment made me feel like I conquered myself. It was a happy feeling,” said Angad, a data scientist by profession residing in Bangalore.

“People have a lot of stigma about diabetes. I wanted to overpower it all. It is not difficult to deal with diabetes. The key is to monitor the level of sugar and change the dose accordingly,” Angad said.

“Running helped me to manage my condition better. I decided to run Tata Mumbai Marathon earlier this year and later on ran the Medtronic Twin City Marathon in the US. During my first marathon, I could barely run a few miles and was in need of injectable insulin. Yet, I completed it and that was one of the happiest days of my life. At every step, I learned about my health condition. I am physically and mentally much more strong now," says Angad. From not being able to run 100m to now practicing for a 42.2km marathon, Angad has achieved a lot with diabetes.
