While a lot can be done to increase awareness on HIV - AIDS, the misconceptions on the health issue need to be dispelled too.

Here are some common myths about the condition:

1.  I will get HIV through contact with HIV positive people: HIV only spreads through exchange of bodily fluids such as blood, semen etc. So hugging, kissing, touching, sharing food, utensils etc will not infect you wit the virus.

2.  Mosquito bites will spread HIV: There is no evidence to suggest that HIV survives in the insect to be transmitted to a person.

3. Only people of certain socio-economic section get HIV/AIDS: While women, men having sex with men, intravenous drug abusers etc are more vulnerable to getting HIV due to lack of access to awareness on the illness prevention of it, anyone can get infected with the virus. Lower or higher income groups are not th only demographic population that can get HIV/AIDS.

4. Only gay men get HIV: While men having sex with men and gay individuals are at more risk due to poor health care and awareness, the virus can affect an individual of any sexual orientation.

5.  I can't spread HIV if I am being treated for it: Though the treatment can significantly lower the amount of the virus in your body, the virus still persists in your system and hence you should take precautions before having sex, during blood transfusions etc.

6.  I don't have to practise safe sex if both my partner and I are HIV positive: Practising safe sex will help you prevent transmitting other (potentially deug-resistant) HIV virus strains.

7.  I can't get HIV through oral sex: While the risk is less it is possible to get HIV from a man or woman with the condition.
