We’ve all heard or read common haircare mistakes we ought to avoid making such as not washing hair with hot water or air drying them instead of using the blow dryer. But what if I tell you that we all make some not-so-commonly-known mistakes which could seriously ruin our hair? You’ll be surprised to know what these are! Here’s my list of five such faux pas we all need to quit right away.

Styling wet hair

Yes, your hair sets well when it is wet but this habit is ruining it by making it weak. Hair is likelier to break when it is wet. Combing it or using styling tools and products can cause more damage when hair is wet. The excessive heat produced when using these tools can shock your hair and make them brittle. Also, wax and gels on wet hair can settle on your scalp and lead to problems such as dandruff and itching. Here are 6 dos and don’ts for managing wet hair.

Sporting the same hairstyle

Are you someone who sports the same hairstyle all the time? You need to change it often not just for your appearance but also for your hair’s health. Having the same hairstyle can lead to problems such as increase in the width of your parting if you happen to part your hair. If you tie your hair too often, you need to make sure the rubber band isn’t too tight as this can put constant pressure on your hair and even lead to hair loss. So let your hair down once in a while and go from the girl next door to glam chic. Do you have curly hair? Avoid these mistakes.

Not changing shampoo brands

You may swear by your favourite brand of cosmetic but when it comes to your tresses, make sure you love more than just one brand and keep alternating between them on a regular basis. This is because using the same shampoo can make your scalp resistant to it after a point and it won’t work on your hair. So don’t buy those giant shampoo bottles that never seem to get over. Instead, stock up on 3-4 different shampoo brands but of the same type and be spoilt for choice. Here’s how to pick the right shampoo.

Skipping hair conditioner

Think shampoo is enough to keep your mane looking lovely? It can only cleanse out the dirt and impurities but a hair conditioner will add the required moisture, make your tresses soft and control the frizz to an extent. If you have greasy hair like me, use the conditioner only on the tips but don’t skip it unless you like it rough. Are you using the right conditioner? Find out here.

Not using a heat protector

Using styling tools is damaging to your hair but using them without a heat protector is taking the damage to a notch much higher. Heat protectors can be in the form of a spray which you can use right before you use your straightener or if you are using your blow-dryer, keep it at the coolest or lowest setting to decrease the damage.
